Oh.
Yes.
I.
Did.
Sorry it’s been so long and I have so much to share, but let’s start with Halloween. Veruca was really set on being a fairy princess — what. else. is. new? I’m sick of the princess racket — I still gave in and let her be a fairy princess at her school party — and was determined that this was the year that the kids were going to dress in the costumes that I wanted them to dress in. Don’t be fooled — Halloween, like weddings, is about the parents.
Aspie wanted to be Anakin Skywalker, so I had to orchestrate the other two costumes around him. He’s nine and not above pulling the “I need to express my individuality” crap. Yoda was an obvious choice for DD. Yoda — he calls him “Oda” — is his favorite character. Seeing my most simple child dressed as one of the wisest, most complicated sages of the Star Wars saga was beyond ironic. Veruca was my challenge. She could not see the appeal of Princess Leia and being part of a set was no carrot for this child. A few times I thought I had convinced her to be Princess Leia, but then she’d revert back to her constant inquiries of “Can I be a fairy princess instead?”
Then, in a sudden flash of brilliance, I remembered currency. Her currency. ”Veruca, if you go as Princess Leia you get to wear makeup. Sadly, fairy princesses don’t wear makeup.” Her eyes started spinning like a slot machine as she tallied up the data. Result? Princess Leia. She got so excited about the whole ordeal that she forgot about the makeup, too! I pride myself in stripping my child of her dreams and desires whilst she’s young and I still can. Quite frankly, this is my last chance to convince them to do a theme for Halloween.
The kids got a ton of candy! Their baskets were small Darth Vader baskets, but they got the brilliant idea that I should carry a tote bag that they could empty their stash into. Therefore, at almost every house, unsuspecting homeowners would glance at their empty baskets and think that their place was our first stop of the night. They would generously offer that my children should help themselves. Oh, and Veruca did. We had many conversations about how she needed to take one piece of candy, not eight.
We walked up and down several streets — and I did hear people say “Look at them. They dressed in a theeeeeeeme.” — but it took forever. It took forever because my daughter introduced our whole family to every, single candy giver. ”Hello. I’m Veruca and this is my brother Aspie. Yoda is my other brother, DD. Oh, and this is my daddy and my mommy is down there on the sidewalk. She said I can only have one piece of candy.” Every. Single. House.
We eventually got home and the kids snacked on apple cider and Halloween munchkins. Everyone went to sleep in short time. It was a lovely evening.
The next morning was the beginning of Daylight Savings Time which was bad on a couple counts. The kids woke up at the ungodly hour of like, two. Or maybe five. They crawled into our bed and watched television on the lowest volume ever. It was probably about 5:30 when Veruca mounted me and stared into my face until I opened one eye. ”Mommy, can I be a fairy princess for next Halloween?”

Ha, ha! I was able to dress my kids in a theme this year only because I let my daughter (3 yrs) pick the theme for herself and her brother (9 months) of a cat and dog. Won’t be so easy in a couple years. My dear sweet girl tried to go inside every house we trick or treated at. I guess it’s appropriate since she thinks the world revolves around her, and has yet to grasp the concept of a stranger.

I love that you dressed them up this way. To hell with kids getting to choose their own costumes, I say!
They are so adorable. Seriously. And I swoon over Veruca’s teeth! She’s a doll! Seriously, all 3 are gorgeous.

Aspie looks VERY cool! I love V’s Princess L hair, and DD… he looks like he’s about to say something very wise in that pic at the top
I’m so glad you got some good pics… I can’t wait to show B.

I hate Halloween. I can’t even express how much. There are no words for it. I always hated it. I remember being 4 and being dragged up and down the street with my siblings who loved it, wishing I was at home in my pyjamas eating their candy instead! This year was different though. My three boys (also my three oldest) didn’t dress up. They are all in junior high now and it’s ‘for babies’. Which ironically, my 22 month old refused to participate in because all of the costumes scared the shit out of her. With her, it’s Elmo or bust bitches. So I essentially had 1 kid in the spirit, for which I made an amazing, homemade black kitty cat costume. If you understood the depths of my hatred for this holiday you’d see the wow factor in that haha. Enjoy it while you can m’Lady, because it goes f-a-s-t. One day, you wake up, and they are “so over it!”. PS-I HEART YODA!

They look great! I’m glad you’re back to posting here. I hid the candy in the kitchen and will discard it soon. My son is really only interested in Tootsie Rolls. He also wanted to chat it up with the neighbors. But he gets better at the Halloween routine every year.

AWESOME! JUST AWESOME!
That Priness Leia wig slays me.
My kids were always “dress-er up-pers.” In the late 1990′s my oldest son came upstairs announcing, “This is what I’m wearing for Halloween!”
“Ooookaaay…what is it?”
Disgusted sigh. “I’M HAN SOLO IN HOTH GEAR!”
I was an idiot not to realize he was not only dressed as the character, but more specifically, the action figure.
The next year, after the release of The Phantom Menace, I took charge and made both my sons Obi-Wan costumes. Brown flowing hooded robe, linen tunic with sash, braided doll hair taped behind their ears. And for myself: Queen Amidala.
For some reason, I have NO photos of them in these costumes. But I did recently find a photo of my son dressed as General MacArthur.
